Sustainability

Are you a Conscious Consumer?

October 8, 2023

I was so thrilled to see the maternity bundles were a hit and after selling out, it’s time to give you more. While I was considering each bundle, I got to thinking about what this collection was really about, for Mother Dragon and for you the consumer. I kept coming back to those phrases we hear all too often like sustainable fashion, environmentally friendly, circular collections and let’s be honest, at times it is just greenwashing. However, there is one phrase that sticks for me; conscious consumer.

If you buy preloved clothing, preloved anything, you are making a clear decision. Motivations may differ from person to person but if you are here, shopping at Mother Dragon, I can only assume we share some values. The maternity bundles go a step further. Of course like any other collection, I want to ensure there are a range of sizes, prices and preloved quality but the bundles that include clothing in Good Condition really got me thinking.  These items have been worn and loved and help fulfil one of Mother Dragon’s missions; to extend the life cycle of clothing. This is where the conscious consumerism comes into it. If a piece of clothing is , new and cheap, is the consumer actually getting better value for money? Knowing what we know about fast fashion brands, from the poor working conditions to the environmental impact of nearly every aspect of clothing production and manufacturing, I have to ask why would you buy new? When we make a conscious decision to pay for preloved clothes, we are acknowledging how they were made and by who, the impact this garment has on the environment and our responsibility in this cycle. And that is why this week’s collection is so important to me.

Sustainable fashion is a minefield and although it is great to have it in our faces, it can be hard to navigate where we fit into it. As a consumer myself, I am still working on it and that perhaps is key. There is always room for learning, always opportunity to take action and that action may change from day to day. It is not fixed or binary. As founder of Mother Dragon, my goals and mission are defined. I know exactly what I want to do for you as a consumer,  and for these preloved items. For now, it may only be a small contribution to the world of sustainability but we have to try, don’t we?

Hi, I’m Jo Leggiero, founder of Mother Dragon.

I'm an Australian/Italian and I've been calling Dublin home for the past fifteen years. I love fashion and the power it has to make you feel incredible. Give me lipstick, coffee, good food, time with my two little fire crackers, Lucille and Remy and time with my family and friends and you have me sorted. It has been such an incredible journey, like pregnancy, seeing Mother Dragon being born and I'm so glad you have come to visit.

One of my favourite pairs of jeans currently in the shop.

I love the shape of these River Island jeans. It's not trend-led or designed for just one season. It's the kind of jean that will stay relevant in a mama's wardrobe for years to come.

I know maternity clothes can feel like hard work but your style doesn't disappear when you become pregnant. Your clothes should still feel like you. That's why I'm always drawn to pieces that are well made, comfortable and timeless, rather than simply designed to get you through nine months.

Pregnancy is just one chapter. Your wardrobe doesn't have to start from scratch because of it.

Can you guess which brand always seems to arrive in the shop looking top-notch?

Even when I grade pieces from this brand as Good Condition (and you know how tough I am with my preloved conditions), I know they've often been worn well over 100 times and there's still plenty of life left in them.

Leave a comment and take a guess πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

I'll be taking a break over the summer so last orders: 12th of July. Any orders placed after this date will be posted from 14th August.

The shop will remain open, and I'll still be checking emails and social media occasionally 😜

It's going to be a huge second half of the year for Mother Dragon, with lots of exciting things planned! If you read the Summer Newsletter, you'll already know what's coming... πŸ‘€

In the meantime, I'll be sharing a few of my family adventures over on Mother Dragon's Instagram, so be prepared for πŸ₯πŸ”πŸ˜ŽπŸ₯΅πŸ§€πŸ“š

It's not a new conversation, but as preloved shopping becomes more popular, where do our values fit in?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The heat can make getting dressed feel like a challenge during pregnancy, but it doesn't have to be.

Natural fabrics and looser-fitting styles can make all the difference, helping your body breathe and move more comfortably throughout the day.

And let's not forget about style. This vibrant coral dress is one of those easy pieces that requires very little thought. The relaxed fit, soft gathers and button-front detail offer comfort and style in equal measure, making it perfect for warmer days.

Stay well in the heat, mamas πŸ˜Žβ˜€οΈ

If I were pregnant right now, this is what I'd be wearing.

Maternity jeans and a few pieces from my own wardrobe.

Pregnancy asks a lot of your clothes. They need to be comfortable and practical, but they should still feel like you.

The best outfits are often the simplest ones. The ones you reach for without thinking because they fit your body, your style and your mood.

Would you wear this outfit?

Colour analysis is everywhere right now.
We're told certain colours make us glow, while others wash us out. And maybe that's true.

But is colour analysis a genuinely useful tool that makes getting dressed easier? Or is it just another fashion rule that's complicating the way we get dressed?

Personally, I think understanding colour can be helpful. But I also think wearing a colour you love counts for a lot, even if it's not in your 'season'.

So tell me, have you had your colours done? Which of these tops would you choose?

πŸ‘‡πŸΌ Trend or useful tool?

Why are there so many skinny maternity jeans?

For years, the styling advice was simple: volume on the top, slim on the bottom. And what has more volume than a growing bump? So it makes sense that skinny maternity jeans became the default.

But as trends change, maternity fashion is catching up. Now we're seeing more straight-leg, wide-leg, mom, barrel and relaxed styles appearing. In fact, they're often the first jeans to sell when they come into the shop.

Skinny jeans haven't disappeared and nor should they; they're just no longer the only option. And choice is always a good thing.

Maternity jeans are also one of the best items to buy preloved. The over-the-bump waistband makes them quite specific, and because they’re usually worn for a short period, many pairs are still in excellent condition with plenty of life in them.

Why do you think skinny maternity jeans dominated for so long? Was it the styling, the fit, or simply a lack of alternatives?
